Other United States Wines | Prices, Types & Reviews

Written By: Brian Freedman on Wed, Jul 12th 2006

Believe it or not, there are wineries in each and every one of the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. This is surprising to most people, for when we think of American wine, we generally limit ourselves to California, New York State, Washington State, and Oregon. The truth, however, is that the wines produced in other parts of the country are actually quite good. Of course, no one believes that the wines of Utah, for example, will ever be able to compete with those from California, but wines are made there nonetheless. And the fact that there are some excellent wineries tucked away in unexpected little corners of the country should be heartening to any connoisseur of classic wines.

One of the most surprising American wines produced in a non-traditional state is the Viognier of Virginia. There are pockets of this state that are absolutely perfect for the growth of Viognier, and the resulting wines are deliciously rich and perfumed. Then there are the wineries of Texas, which have, in recent years, produced some surprisingly tasty Tempranillos and Viogniers. The point is that there are excellent wines being made all over the United States, and as more and more Americans learn about and drink wine, the overall quality should only keep getting better.
