Penedes Wines | Prices, Types & Reviews

Written By: Brian Freedman on Wed, Jan 24th 2007

Located in the northeastern part of Spain, this wine zone is the largest in the region of Catalonia, of which, most famously, Barcelona is a part. The most well-known grape varieties that are grown and vinified there include Monastrell, Carinena, and Garnacha, which is the Spanish name for the classic Rhone variety Grenache (but which, ironically, is now thought to have Spanish origins). The most famous producer of wines in the Penedes is Torres, whose wines have earned a worldwide reputation for their quality and, in some cases, their reasonable price. There are also some excellent white wines made from grapes grown in the Penedes, and they are not terribly difficult to find as Spanish wines become ever more popular in the United States.
