It is no overstatement to say that the wines of the Piedmont region are some of the best in the world, particularly Barolo and Barbaresco. These are red wines made from the Nebbiolo grape, arguably the king of all Italian grape varieties. These grapes, when grown and vinified in Piedmont, are made into full-bodied, explosively rich wines that justifiably make novices and wine connoisseurs swoon. Look for high-end names like Gaja (especially for Barbaresco, the red wine made from Nebbiolo grapes) and La Scolca (for Gavi, the white wine made from Cortese grapes) if you're in the market for some of the finest wines available.
