Pouring the Wine

Written By: Brian Freedman on Mon, Mar 16th 2009

Pouring wine into a glass may seem like a no-brainer, but, in fact, there are a few rules. Okay, there are more than a few rules, but as with everything else wine-related, these rules are meant to enhance your experience, not to make it intimidating.

First, never lift the glass from the table to pour: This just makes it that much more likely that you'll spill.

Second, never touch the neck of the bottle to the rim of the glass: What if there are cooties on there? Think about it for a second: That bottle may have been sitting in a cool, damp cellar for years: Do you really want your lips to touch it? Probably not. (If so, there are plenty of other sites online to help you with that particular issue). Just pour the wine from a centimeter or so above the glass and you'll be fine.

Finally, never fill the glass higher than the widest part of the bowl: If you don't leave enough room for swirling, and for all those amazing wine-aromas to collect in the glass, then you'll be missing out on a lot of the pleasure the wine has to offer. And that kind of defeats the purpose, doesn't it.
