Primitivo is the Italian version of California's Zinfandel. In fact, it is genetically identical, and when it is made into a varietal wine, the result is a similarly fruit-forward, spicy, and highly alcoholic red wine that lovers of California Zinfandel are familiar with. Traditionally, it was used to add heft to lighter red wines, but in recent years, Primitivo has become a notable varietal in its own right. The A-Mano Primitivo, from Puglia, is one of the most popular Primitivos on the American market. At less than $10, it is a steal.
