Wine of the Week: July 3, 2007
This wine is the color of fresh blood, with a brick-colored rim heading in the direction of garnet. But the nose is all rich, ripe blueberries and blackberries, a hint of the expected zinfandel spiciness, and a base note of something almost nutty. It's on the palate, though, that this wine really comes into its own, with a mouth-filling core of chewy, utterly delicious marzipan and a hint of eucalyptus that keeps it from getting weighed down by its own depth of flavor. It finishes on a lovely, almost haunting note of chocolate-covered espresso beans, a nice, subtle end to a surprisingly exuberant wine. All the classic concentration of old-vines zinfandel is here. At less than $20, this is a steal.
