The Rhône region of France is more well-known for its red wines than for its whites. This is unfortunate, for the white wines of this region are every bit as exciting, just as delicious, and, more often than not, completely unique in the world of wine. In the Northern Rhône, Condrieu is the most famous and respected white wine. It is a Viognier varietal wine that is floral and redolent of apricots, and should be enjoyed when it is young. Also, the Rousanne and Marsanne grape varieties are used to produce some very nice wines in the Northern Rhône.
In the Southern Rhone, Grenache Blanc is used to produce some lovely white wines, and a sparkling wine called Clairette de Die is also excellent. Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise is the region's most famous dessert wine. There is no better way to end a big French meal than with a glass of this gold.
