Scharffenberger Brut NV

This wine is proof of how far California sparklers have come. I just wish more people would shell out the extra $5 to buy a bottle of this beauty and leave the Korbel on the shelf. Not that there's anything particularly wrong with that ubiquitous sparkler; it's simply that this Anderson Valley bubbly is just about as delicious as you'll find on this side of the big pond and at this price. Upon smelling it, the first thing you'll notice is the rich, toasted brioche aroma that counterbalances the brighter citrus notes and lends the wine a sense of depth. And while the bubbles may not be as laser-point small as some of the finer Champagnes, the Scharffenberger nonetheless has a mouthfeel that perfectly straddles the line between Old World elegance and New World exuberance. The Scharffenberger Brut NV would be a delicious sparkling wine at twice the price. But at well under $20, it's spectacular.
