Simi 2004 Russian River Valley Chardonnay "Reserve"

This is refreshingly Burgundian in style, and embodies everything I like so much about Russian River Valley Chardonnay. Marzipan and raw almond notes jump from the glass, with undertones of toasty vanilla and a slate-like minerality. The mouthfeel is rich, as you'd hope from California, but not syrupy or overbearing in any way. Fruit, perhaps surprisingly, is not the focus here, though there is a good snap of bright citrus on the finish that really sets the toffee notes into sharp relief.
