Brian Freedman: Welcome to the classicwines.com Weekly Wine Showdown. I am Brian Freedman, and today, day before vacation we decided to celebrate a little bit; we are going to tasting Prosecco. People get a little bit nervous when it comes to having sparkling wine that doesn't say 'Champagne' on the label. There are some wonderful Champagnes out there. I think a lot of people would rather spend 45 or 50 Bucks on an overpriced bottle of Vueve Cliquot Yellow Label - you have seen it before - bottle service - $500 in the club. They'd rather spend the money on that because it's familiar. Prosecco? Oh really good stuff; inexpensive, fun, often very fruity, a whole lot easier to drink on a daily basis than say, champagne - I love this with Cheerios for example.
Now, here is the situation; we are tasting these blind today, but I poured these beforehand because this one had a 0:50 that was up to here; it took about five minutes for it to go down. Figure you don't want to watch that on camera. So our first one today; this is the Prosecco Moletto; let's see what this one is throwing at us. Classic Prosecco nose, it's sort of, it's like lemon cream pie - always what I think of when I smell Prosecco - feel for lemon cream pie. Actually, that's a fun little bottle; there is grape acid which keeps that lemony, creamy, sort of lemon-curd thing from becoming overwhelming. There is a free sweetness to it, but not too much. Really, really significant bubbles though; that's my only complaint. The bubbles are a little bit big for my taste; smaller the bubble, in general, the better the bubbly; it feels better on your tongue - still, really nice little bottle.
The second one here is the Prosecco Mionetto. Now, this one you have to be careful with -- actually no, this one you have to be careful with because it comes with one of these crown caps like on a beer - your mother was right, you could lose an eye, be careful. So, we give this one a little smell. See now this one smells a lot more like Champagne to me; you get those bready, toasty, almost mushroom-like aromas, which makes it seem a lot more serious, like a champagne. Wow! I mean, that one just filled up my mouth like shaving cream - but you know what? That's a really interesting bottle of wine. There is definitely something very funky and mushroomy and -- that's like a serious bottle of wine considering what we paid for it. For less than 15 Bucks for a bottle of sparkler like this one, the Moletto -- I got to tell you, the Mionetto for the price, this one has to win this week's showdown - I think its called a showdown - either way, the bubbles are going to my head. I am going on vacation, so until next time, this has been the Weekly Wine Showdown brought to you by classicwines.com - and you know what, I am not thinking about wine my entire vacation because like I am always telling you, its only grapes. Cheers!
