Val d'Aosta has the distinction of being Italy's smallest wine-producing region. This does not, however, mean that it's wines are not worth noticing. Quite the contrary: The wines of this region in northwestern Italy, near the borders with Switzerland and France, are exciting, very pleasant, and often unexpectedly flavorful. From wines made of Nebbiolo, arguably Italy's greatest grape variety, to those produced from Dolcetto, Grenache, Syrah, and other unexpected varieties, this is a region worth tasting your way through. The only problem is that you may have a difficult time finding all that you desire: Because the region is so small, there is just not enough wine produced each year to satisfy a huge market like the one in the United States. Still, try these wines if you can find them-they are more than worth the effort.
