Video Transcript: Ordering Wine On a Date - Bottle Do's and Don'ts

Brian Freedman: Welcome to the Classic Wines Minute brought to you by classicwines.com; I am your host Brian Freedman. And today we are here with Romany Reagan, our "Wine in the City" columnist. Romany, first of all, thank you for joining us. You know, you have been writing about your good dates, your bad dates, your sort of in-between dates and we asked you today to show up with some date wine. And it looks like not all of them are necessarily good date wines.
Romany Reagan: No.
Brian Freedman: Well, we have to start with the Old Fart's wife; what's happening here, please explain this to me?
Romany Reagan: Well, first of all, the conotation is not good; I mean neither for you or the potentially future old fart that that you are going out with. She has this -- if you can zoom in on this, I do not know, but she has got this really horrible Nebraska boufont thing going on and it is just sort of you know you can just see him seeing you in 20 years looking like this and it is just not attractive.
Brian Freedman: Also the name is kind of awkward on a first date.
Romany Reagan: Yeah.
Brian Freedman: Alright, and then this; I do not even want to touch this. You touch this, this is kind of radioactive for a guy.
Romany Reagan: I will, I will, okay. This is probably the big daddy of all date don'ts. Well at least when I look at this I think of fluffy pillows and cats, neither of which a guy wants to think of. I mean the stuffed animals and this under your bed.
Brian Freedman: No guy you want to date.
Romany Reagan: No.
Brian Freedman: Yeah, but it matches my shirt beautifully.
Romany Reagan: Oh, it does. What is that saying?
Brian Freedman: Don't ask, just talk.
Romany Reagan: Okay.
Brian Freedman: So this is -- I mean this really -- this is the kind of thing where you are on a date you do not necessarily want to -- you do not want to order this because any guy is probably going to feel a little bit awkward with Pink Merlot to begin with, but the big pink bottle of Pink Merlot. This is sort of like a double whammy. Drink this with the girls when you are watching "Sex in the City", whatever, mud masks, I do not know what the girls do, but yeah, so avoid that.
As a guy now, it looks like this is Il Bastardo. This is something that a guy probably wants to avoid on a date?
Romany Reagan: Yes, absolutely. This is sort of the male counterpart to the Old Fart's wife. If you look at this guy, I mean this is a supplemental message. She can just see ahead and see him sitting there stout and chubby and, you know, and he's a bastard to boot, which is not good.
Brian Freedman: Yeah, plus he has a creepy skinny moustache, which you know --
Romany Reagan: Yes, really John Waters.
Brian Freedman: Definitely, John Waters, well done. Now here is -- I am hoping you brought something that is a good date wine, right?
Romany Reagan: Yes.
Brian Freedman: Alright, so please help us out here. We are dying here.
Romany Reagan: Okay, this one is excellent, because not only do you have the lovely classy label which makes you look like you know what you are doing when you order this at a restaurant, but it has these lovely golden fishnets on it, which are a lovely sexy subliminal message.
Brian Freedman: Right, and aside from this subliminal messaging part it is -- this is the Marques de Riscal is a very reliable producer of Rioja. This is a Spanish wine. '03 is going to give you enough ripe rich fruit that it will really appeal to the people who like the fruitier wines, yet because it is a Rioja you will get enough of the earth and sort of the smokier characteristics, that it will work for the guys because all guys apparently order meat.
This is apparently how it works, the last time I dated. So fishnets good, big pink bottle is bad; the bottom line make sure when you order your wine it is appropriate for the event not just for the food, not just for restaurant. Do not go too far in one direction or another, is that fair?
Romany Reagan: Absolutely.
Brian Freedman: Romany, this has changed my life. If I ever start dating again I will definitely call you for wine advice first.
Romany Reagan: Excellent.
