Washington State Wines | Prices, Types & Reviews

Written By: Brian Freedman on Wed, Jul 12th 2006

Not nearly enough people are familiar with the high-quality wines of Washington State. Indeed, this land is woefully underappreciated by all but the most strident connoisseurs of American wines. This is unfortunate, because the wines produced here represent some of the highest-quality American wines for a very reasonable cost. From the reasonably well-known region of Walla Walla to the Puget Sound, the wines of Washington should gain in popularity in years to come.

Washington is popularly known as Merlot country, and though these tend to be perfectly good wines, they are not the only varietal wines produced there. Riesling and Gewurztraminer both do well in Washington, and the Chardonnays are fantastic. Bordeaux grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc thrive, and the Rh'´ne standard Syrah is grown beautifully there. So whether you buy a bottle from one of the major producers, like Chateau Ste Michelle or Columbia Crest, or from one of the smaller producers like A to Z (which makes a wonderful Pinot Noir at a very reasonable price), you are sure to be surprised and delighted by the wines of Washington State.
