Wine Storage and Refrigeration

Written By: Anonymous on Thu, Jan 17th 2008

Brian Freedman: Welcome to the Classic Wines Minute brought to you by ClassicWines.com. I am your host Brian Freedman. Today we are in Pinot Boutique in old city Philadelphia and we will be talking about wine storage. Now as more people get more into wine, the issue of how you organize and store your bottles becomes a very important one that you have to deal with. We have four great examples today, that we will discuss. The first one here, this is a wine rack.

This helps you organize your bottles, it helps you keep them all in one place, makes a great presentation. This is perfect for bottles that you are planning on drinking in the short-term, because it is not temperature or humidity controlled, it is best to keep your bottles here that you plan on drinking in the next couple of months. The reason for that is because the worst enemy of wine would be huge swings in temperature. Alright, the wine will expand, contract, can possibly break the seal of the cork, you do not want to really risk the wine that way, but this is great for storage, it is great for keeping all of your wines accessories in one place as well.

Now over here, now we are starting to get into refrigeration units. Now this one is great for small apartments, people who live in cities, in Philadelphia I know I have had a couple of apartments where this was actually bigger than it. This holds half a dozen bottles and this you can actually control the temperature of your bottles. Store your bottles anywhere form 55 to 56 degrees with a constant temperature. Alright, couple of degree swing here and there is alright, but something like this is great for bottles that you plan on holding on to, for anywhere from 6 months to five years or so.

Then we get over here and this one; now we are starting to talk about furniture. This one you can actually keep everything you own on top, does not even have to be wine related. You can hold several dozen bottles in here, again it makes a great presentation. The advantage of a unit like this is you also have the ability to control humidity as well. You do not want your corks to get too dry, otherwise they will dry out and the oxygen will get in and then you will have a cabinet full of vinegar.

So units like this, are absolutely a great option if you have the room they really do add something to a room. Finally and we will come over there, this one by Marvel is probably I would say it is one of the most popular models these days. It holds though let us say three dozen bottles in there, it controls the temperature, it is a great looking unit for a front apartment but it doesn't take up all that much room.

If you are just getting into wine, if you are starting to put together a good collection a unit like this is absolutely the way to go. You are not going to spend a fortune on it and you can keep your wines in a safe and secure environment. For all of us here at ClassicWines.com, thanks to Pinot Boutique in Philadelphia, I am Brian Freedman.
