Zinfadel Red Wines | Prices, Types & Reviews

Written By: Brian Freedman on Tue, Jul 11th 2006

Zinfandel, sadly, suffered from a bad reputation for many years, due to the popularity in the United States of an inexpensive and sweet pink wine called White Zinfandel. Zinfandel varietal wines, however, have as much relation to White Zinfandel as Coca-Cola has with Champagne. Fortunately, many people are now discovering the considerable charms of Zinfandel, and this reputation has, in recent years, begun to abate.

Zinfandel is the most widely planted red variety in California, where it is made into wines of great power, deep fruit, and spice. They are most popularly made into the kind of high alcohol and fruit-forward wines preferred by devotees of the New World style, and as such they are some of the most well-loved wines made in the United States. Zinfandel is a relative of the Italian Primitivo variety.
