Viognier Wines | Prices, Types & Reviews
Written By: Brian Freedman on Wednesday, July 12, 2006 Viognier is a white-wine producing grape on the rise. In the past 10 to 15 years, Viognier varietal wines have grown in popularity among both connoisseurs and casual wine drinker alike. This is likely due to its rich golden color, relatively high alcohol, and fascinating aromas of flowers and apricot. Indeed, if ever there were a crowd-pleasing white wine, Viognier is it.
Like so many grape varieties that have a home in France, it goes by more than one name. Anytime you see a bottle whose label says Chateau-Grillet, you can be sure it is a Viognier varietal wine. But its most famous incarnation is in Condrieu, the famously expensive Viognier varietal wine of the Northern Rhone. Contrary to classic wine logic, Condrieu is best when it is young - ťa delicious, surprising, and wholly unique wine experience unlike any other. Viognier is also being grown with a great deal of success in both California and South America, and generally the Viognier-based wines from these places are much less expensive than Condrieu. Viognier is also a popular blending grape.
