Wine of the Week - Luce della Vite 2000

This wine, originally the brainchild of two of the world’s most highly regarded producers-Frescobaldi and the Robert Mondavi family-seems to embody all the potential of the “Super-Tuscan” name. And the best part is it won’t break the bank. Sure, it’s not cheap (a bottle from the 1999 vintage, for example, is $79.99), but compared with other wines of such pedigree and quality, that’s not so bad at all. And for the money, you get a mouthful and then some. The 2000, a wine that’s still several years away from hitting its peak, has an intriguing nose of smoke, currants, blackberries, rich chocolate, burnt toast, and something resembling cloves. And as if that weren’t enough, the wine just explodes-after ninety minutes or so in the decanter-with a fabulous combination of dried lavender and hoisin sauce. The tannins are years away from mellowing out, and there’s enough acid there to guarantee that this wine has a tasty, long life ahead of it. But there’s nothing wrong with enjoying it now.
