Chianti Wines | Prices, Types, & Reviews
Few wines are as loved and as well-known as those from Chianti. Chianti itself is found in the Tuscany region of Central Italy, and is one of only a few to be considered D.O.C.G. (Denominazione d'Origine Controllata e Garantita). The Chianti region itself is divided into seven subzones. The most famous of these is Chianti Classico, where the best Chianti wines arguably come from.
Chianti is traditionally made from four grape varieties: Sangiovese, Trebbiano, Canaiola, and Malvasia. Sometimes, however, Cabernet Sauvignon is used, and the result is a 'Super Tuscan' a wine that does not follow the traditional blending laws of Chianti, but which is a powerful, opulent variant of the classic style. The most famous of these so-called Super Tuscans are Sassicaia, Tignanello, and Ornellaia.
