Grenache has grown in popularity in recent years, and it may surprise some wine enthusiasts that it is the second most widely-planted variety in the entire world. In its French incarnation, Grenache is best known as one of the three main blending varieties for southern Rhône wines, along with Syrah and Mourvedre. It is, however, also blended with a number of other varieties, depending on the location and the style of wine being made. Grenache is also made into varietal or blended rosès in parts of southern France, most famously Tavel, an appellation on the right bank of the Rhone River.
