Long considered a supporting player in Bordeaux, Malbec is now best known as one of the most widely planted varieties in Argentina, which arguably produces the worlds best Malbec varietal wines. In Argentina, Malbecs are tannic, deeply colored, and rich wines that, depending on the vintage and the style in which they are made, can be drunk immediately upon release or aged for years.
Malbec is also widely grown in Chile, where conditions produce a grape that is more suited to blending it is often a bit too tannic to stand on its own in its Chilean incarnation. Malbec is not widely grown in the United States.
