Portugal Wines | Prices, Types, & Reviews
For centuries, Portugal has been best known for Port, the sweet, fortified wine of the Douro Region. This is the classic after-dinner drink: Relatively high in alcohol (generally around 18%), pleasantly sweet, and often astoundingly complex, Port runs the gamut from ready-to-drink young Tawny Ports to vintage bottles that must be ages for up to 50 years or more for their full flavors to manifest themselves. But Portugal is now becoming known for its table wines, too. These tend to be lighter bodied and fruitier, with an occasionally pleasant rustic quality. And because of their relatively newfound popularity, Portuguese table wines are some of the best values on the market.
