2000 DuMol Pinot Noir Russian River Valley

Very California in size, color and extraction. Cherry syrup, cinnamon, and wood bark all emerge from this masculine pinot. It is huge and impressive. Fans of burgundian style pinot won't like it, but it is tasty and fun, with a long finish. Drank with chicken picatta- a nice pairing. Even though it is 7 years old, it has sufficient structure to...read more
2003 Martinelli Blue Slide Ridge Pinot Noir
Written By: Michael Zimberg on Friday, November 21, 2008
Huge, brooding, sweet and utterly fantastic with ripe waxy caramel, and porchini mushrooms. Dark purple and red fruits, spice, earth and a very long finish. Light and long, smooth and round. Stains the palate. 3 hours later, I can still feel the wine. My favorite American pinot, thus far. Got this on a wine list for $165. Worth every penny. Got...read more

Champagne: Cashing In On Older Vintages
Written By: Kasey Carpenter on Thursday, November 20, 2008
Buy now, drink now - that's the modus for champagne. This trend leaves an opening for investment in older vintages.
One doesn't often think of Champagne when they think of investment potential. But why not? It is a scare commodity, a rather pricey one, can age pretty well (though not as long as Bordeaux, typically) and is sought by those with money. Oh and then there is the sexy factor, which makes people forget their senses when they absolutely have to have...read more

2005 Domaine Pierre Usseglio Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Captivating wine. I'd like to try an Usseglio higher-end label. Smells like lavender, crushed black pepper and warm dirt. Interesting gamy, smoky, mineral flavors with good balance. Perfect with a piece of sopressata. This is a wine that can be contemplated for not a lot of money. An excellent value. I got this 6 months ago at Premier Cru for...read more

2003 Walter Clore Private Reserve Columbia Crest
Written By: Michael Zimberg on Wednesday, November 19, 2008
Medium translucent ruby. Give it 15 minutes to open up and it becomes quite an interesting wine. Interesting aromas of rose hips, and classic Bordeaux cigar box and lead pencil. Then ripe blackberries, eucalyptus, and a long, smooth (yet tannic) finish. Lovely details surrounding an elegant frame. I would love to serve this blind in a Saint...read more
