The varietal fingerprints of a wine can include descriptions as diverse as roses, barnyard, pepper, game and blackberries. Every single wine grape has a distinctive personality no matter where it is grown. Regardless of what the wine maker does to the wine there will the same underlying characteristic, or fingerprint, with each and every bottle of pinot noir, syrah or whichever wine you are tasting.

This concept explains a subtle grape truth that we all sort of realize but never really named.

I always knew that wines had certain trademark characteristics, but I didn't realize there was an official term for it.

Fingerprints, much like on humans, are hard to distinguish in my opinion. However, a great example - is when someone who doesn't know too much about wine says "I know what I like" - they actually are most likely referring to the varietal fingerprints they have determined match their tastes. Now we all can say "I know what Varietal Fingerprint I like" and sound smart.
