"To catch merlot at the peak of ripeness is rare in Napa Valley. Chris Phelps at Swanson managed to do that in 2004, blending grapes from estate vineyards in Oakville as well as the Mayacamas benchlands on the western side of the valley. The result is a wine with pure black currant flavor (something more associated with cabernet sauvignon-of which this has a small amount blended in.) The structure feels spherical and the flavor fills every receptor with a luscious, gracious balance of fresh fruit and cool, earthy tannin. Mellow and beautifully toned, this has enough structure to match beef Wellington." - Wine & Spirits, 94 points!
