Waterbrook 1999 Meritage (mountain)
Description:
Rated (92) by "Wine and Spirits" & "Highly Recommended" -Red Mountain Meritage, Columbia Valley. The nose could pass for Medoc; it has the depth and complexity, the tight cassis fruit, the hints of cedar and lead pencil. In the mouth, it is firm, tannic and refined with elegant flavors of leather and earth…stylish, and a fine example of how Washington can emulate the flavors of Bordeaux. Firm and chewy, a stylish Merlot blend, packed with juicy currant and plum flavors, with a racy hot pepper and mint streak running through the finish. Rated "Highly Recommended" - 1999 Red Mountain Meritage, Columbia Valley. Suave nose dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, with ample black raspberry and black cherry aromas. This tannic wine has the essentials -- complexity and intensity, balance, mouthfeel, and length -- but it needs time to meld. Cellar 3-5 years to soften the tannins. Northwest Palate March/April 2001 Considering that Waterbrook co-owner and winemaker Eric Rindal is so youthful and energetic these days, he was barely of drinking age when he helped LEcole No. 41 with their first crush. That experience did more to fire his wine passion than it did to discourage him,and he started Waterbrook Winery in 1984. From the very beginning, Eric has sought to produce the very type of wines he likes to drink--supple and well extracted. Of course, winemaking isnt the only thing that occupies his thoughts. He loves flying, and owns his own plane, which he uses to give guests airborne tours around the Walla Walla area vineyards. Originally from Seattle, Eric chose winemaking for the lifestyle it seemed to offer. It likely never occurred to him that hed be working so hard and spending many sleepless nights during harvest, crush and bottling.
